This is one of the more substantial nineteenth century Historical Records which covers the First, or Royal Regiment of Foot. It traces the history of the regiment from its origins in the reign of James VI of Scotland through a host of famous battles and sieges until 1838 including the Battle of Sedgemoor, 1685, the Battles of Aboukir and Alexandria in 1801, in the West Indies, extensively throughout the Peninsular War – Corunna, Busaco, Fuentes d’Onor, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Burgos, Vittoria, St. Sebastian, Bidassoa, Nivelle and Nive – also on the expedition to Walcheren, the siege of Bergen-op-Zoom, at the Battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo, and subsequently in India and Burma, to name but a few! This superb book is adorned with three striking, hand-coloured plates depicting the Colours of the Regiment, Colonel Sir Robert Douglas at the Battle of Steenkirk, and the Uniform in 1838. This copy bears the small ownership label and at one time came from the library of Major General Sir Rohan Delacombe, K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., C.B., D.S.O., who was a senior British Army Officer who commanded the British occupation forces in Berlin from 1959 to 1962 at the height of the Cold War. He was also the last British Governor of Victoria, Australia from 1963 to 1974.
