There is a hole in the hinge behind the title-page ; a manufacturing error, but this does not weaken the book which is o/w FINE. Only 2,500 Hardback Copies were Printed. This definitive, painstakingly researched book is the result of 18 years research and the first complete history of Elder Dempster, a prominent Liverpool shipping company. The authors provide details of 586 ships with their careers and other particulars. The book is illustrated with 10 coloured plates and more than 600 photographs, drawings and facsimiles – the latter ranging from a rare log of the 1850s to an account of a typical voyage from the Mersey to West Africa in the 1970s. There are also plans, reports of Courts of Enquiry, extracts from U-boat war diaries, Master’s reports, stowage plans, and a wealth of other material on ED’s, much of it hitherto unpublished. The authors have made a major contribution to the history of Liverpool shipping in general, and the West African trade in particular, from 1852 onwards. There are full details of every Elder Dempster ship, both passenger liners and cargo vessels, from 1852 to 1985.
