£25.00

B.D.V. cold. vignette port. on silk. 16 x 11cm. Frayed around the edges as usual o/w, clean, bright & V.G.+. Godfrey Philips Limited introduced the popular B.D.V. brand of cigarettes around 1900, and they remained in existence until 1948. The abbreviations are taken from Philips's US suppliers, Messrs. Boyd & Dibrell Virginia. This silk probably dates from around the time of Jutland in 1916. It shows a quarter-length vignette portrait, in full colour, of Admiral Beatty (1871-1936) who commanded the British battlecruisers at Jutland. SCARCE.
