Michelin & Cie, Paris, FIRST EDITION, 1917. 264 pp., numerous photo-ills., plans + several double-page, coloured plates of maps. Original soft boards ; remains of front & rear cover of d.j., tipped in but lacking the d.j., spine : 20 x 14cm. Covers warped & lightly stained around the bottom edge ; spine split & chipped with a small split to foot of front joint ; damp to bottom edge caused some pages to adhere but most separated easily leaving them a little ‘chalky’ or spotted with a handful rubbing the odd word ; o/w GOOD. Published in 1917 the Foreword acknowledges that until the war ends the reader can only tour the battlefields of France in his mind but this book anticipates the future when the reader can tour them in reality. It was therefore designed to be something of a practical guide as well as a history of the battles and events that have taken place on the ground covered by the guide. A wealth of photographs plus several double-page, coloured plates of maps accompany the text which also includes a brief military commentary on the numerous views and panoramas contained in the book.
