They go on to describe the different types of U-boat that put to sea in 1939 to wage war on British and Allied merchant shipping, and their success until the tide turned against them in 1943 after the Enigma codes were broken by Bletchley Park. The author examines every technical aspect of the U-boats, from their engines and propulsion to their guns and torpedoes. Every type of U-boat is described in detail up to the 1980s.
