1st.ed., 2004. Xiv + 136 pp., Numerous pages of facsimiles + cold. endpapers of original dust jackets. D.j., 25 x 20cm. FINE. At the time of his death, Patrick O’Brian had begun to write a novel to follow on from Blue at the Mizzen, the 20th book in the celebrated Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin series. The chapters are presented here in both facsimile and in their printed form, continuing on for several pages beyond the end of the typescript with O’Brian’s marginal notes. The story picks up from where his previous novel left off, when Aubrey receives the news in Chile of his elevation to flag rank – Rear-Admiral of the Blue - with orders to sail to the South African station. To the international following that O’Brian enjoyed, and still exists, this is a final gem from an author with a touch of genius. FINE copy. [See also No. 106]
