Edinburgh, Cambridge & Durham, 1st.ed., 1995. 206 pp., photo-ills., etc. D.j. 22 x 14cm. FINE. [See No. 126 above] After painting a general picture of life at sea before the war, the author provides a personal account of life at sea in seven merchant ships during the war itself : S/S VOCO, S/S LANCASTER CASTLE, S/S LOWTHER CASTLE, S/S POLLUX II, S/S FORT MAUREPAS, S/S SAMWAKE, and S/S EDWARD BRUCE. He describes his experiences in Atlantic and Russian convoys, voyages to North Africa, the invasion of Sicily and Italy in which he took part, and the sinking of one of his ships by torpedo from a flotilla of E-boats. He devotes a chapter to each of the seven vessels, with further chapters on convoys and DEMS. Illustrated with photographs, maps and facsimiles.
