Shipbuilding in the Devonshire harbour of Appledore has been a local tradition for two centuries, with the author’s family being in the forefront of the industry that built celebrated wooden schooners in the 19th century, and MTBs for the Royal Navy in time of war during the 20th century. Appledore men also repaired numerous small naval craft, and built a variety of ships from tugs to dredgers ; trawlers to a replica of Drake’s GOLDEN HIND.
