Two mid-19th century journals kept by emigrants as they sailed across the Atlantic to Canada in the days of the square-riggers. They describe voyages aboard the barques CIVILITY and OCEAN QUEEN. The former sailed from Bideford towards Quebec in March 1848 ; the latter left Bristol for the same destination in March 1855. They tell of the harshness of life at sea under sail, and the book is illustrated with 30 plates and 3 figures.
