Published during the Cold War, this work was written for the specific purpose of providing a basic textbook for the teaching of Russian to selected naval ratings who, despite their limited academic background, were required to reach a high standard and attain a basically sound grasp of the fundamentals of the Russian language. It was compiled by National Service officers and ratings and the naval and civilian staff of the R.N. Unit, R.A.F. Tangmere, three miles east of Chichester in West Sussex. It was compiled with a strictly Service bias and includes naval expressions.
