This is a personal record of a soldier in the Rifle Brigade during World War I. It includes his experiences in the Salient, on the Somme - at the Battle of Guillemont, at Vimy and Loos, involved in staff work with the 73rd Brigade, and at Vimy Ridge, Messines Ridge and the end. The editor states in his preface, "'written as they are by one who had a habit of minute observation and who took pains to record what he saw and experienced, the letters present a wonderfully vivid, detailed, and accurate picture of trench life and warfare as it was in 1915 and 1916'" Published in 1918 and illustrated with sixteen photograph plates.
