With his energetic and outstanding organisational ability he attacked every problem with determination, from deft handling of tricky political situations to ridding Khartoum of its flies and mosquitoes. He and his wife found themselves in many comic situations, from trekking in often rather primitive conditions, to entertaining Kings and ex Kings.
