This is a famous account of service on The Somme in 1916 with the 10th West Yorks by the British writer Max Plowman, 1883 – 1941. The author, who wrote this memoir under a pseudonym, suffered shell shock during the appalling battle, which is vividly described in this book, and he was invalided back to Britain. He became a conscientious objector in 1918 and subsequently a leading British pacifist. SCARCE First Edition.
