Kimber, 1st ed., 1980. 192 pp., numerous ills., + a photo-ill. D.j., 24 x 16cm. Scuff to inside flap of f.f.e.p, affecting some of the blurb with remains of adhesive to f.e.p., (blank) & letter ‘D’ to rear e.p., o/w V.G.+. The author served in the trenches of the Western Front from the Battle of Loos to the Battle of Third Ypres, in which he was badly wounded and invalided home. He had a painter’s eye for detail not only of the horrors of war but of the countryside around him and after the war he became a water colourist of great repute. He painted the scenes he saw on the Western Front and many of his sketches are reproduced in this book, adding a realism and immediacy to his evocative text.
