A history of the Royal Navy's gunnery school, HMS EXCELLENT, an establishment that began life afloat in 1830 aboard an old wooden wall of that name. Many years later it came ashore on man-made Whale Island in Portsmouth harbour, and for most of the last century it was acknowledged as being in the forefront of naval gunnery, ready to take on new commitments and radical experiments. In addition to the history of EXCELLENT, the author provides in the appendices, a list of the captains and other officers of the gunnery school. There is a chronology of the school, and lists of her gunnery firing ships & tenders.
