FIRST EDITION, Richard Tilling, 1956. 329 pp., frontis., + 85 other plates + map e.p's. Red cloth ; gilt. 22 x 14cm. Nr.FINE. First edition copies of this work were severely limited in number due to the death of the publisher, Richard Tilling, and a second edition did not appear until eleven years later in 1967. The passenger steamer services operating during the previous century and a half were almost completely unrecorded until this book was published in 1956. The author describes the routes from Bristol to Irish ports, and the Bristol Channel services into South Wales, Devon, Isles of Scilly, etc. He also chronicles the deeds of the blockade-runners and the Bristol Channel pleasure steamers at war 1914-1918, and 1939-1945, with Fleet Lists of West Country vessels. The scope of the book takes in Bristol Channel, Irish, Welsh and Liverpool steamers of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a good deal of information on the White Funnel fleet. Illustrated with 86 photographs. Near-FINE copy.
