2 Vols., Cordillera Publishing, Vancouver, B.C., 1st.eds., 1994 & 1995. Vol. I : Xv + 472 pp. Vol. II : Ix + 678 pp. Both volumes profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings, facsimiles, plans, etc. D.j’s. 28 x 23cm. FINE. Highly recommended in the Marine News review (8 August, 1996), this is indeed a monumental work providing an in-depth history of one of Germany’s most famous shipping lines – Norddeutscher Lloyd. At the height of North Atlantic passenger liner travel, this company was in the midst of competition from Britain, France, Holland, Italy, Scandinavia, etc. The history of North German Lloyd has never been detailed to this extent in English before. It covers not only the ships and their captains, but also the postal history as NGL carried in its heyday some 40 % of Atlantic mail. Profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings, facsimiles, plans, etc., the illustrations also include more than 100 different Sea and Ship Post markings, giving added appeal to philatelists and postcard collectors. The author blends a personal history of NGL (his father served the line for 40 years) with comprehensive fleet lists and postal operations. A FINE set in two large volumes.
