6 negatives, each 9 x 6cm. FINE. The MAURITANIA was built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead and sailed on her maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York on the 17th June 1938. These six photographs were taken on that day. She made only a handful of peacetime voyages before the outbreak of war when she was requisitioned to begin her distinguished wartime career. She sailed from Liverpool again as the luxury passenger ship she was designed to be, in April 1947. She was finally broken up in 1965. These negatives provide views of the liner, dressed overall, at a crowded Landing Stage (3 views) ; and as the MAURITANIA sailed down the Mersey for the first time under the command of Captain A. T. Brown, bound across the Atlantic.
