During the First World War the author, a French Baroness, opened her home up to senior British commanders who turned her chateau into a headquarters and lodging. During this period she kept a detailed diary which was subsequently published in 1929 and still serves as an interesting ‘behind-the-scenes’ perspective on the struggle to defend Ypres.
