1st ed., 1957. X+ 213 pp., frontis., + 6 plates. D.j., 22 x 14cm. A little loss to foot of d.j., o/w V.G. This selection of letters of William Harness, chosen by his great-great-great niece, shows that he was an efficient and trustworthy officer and was loved both by his family and by those who served with him. The letters give an absorbing account of Army life and campaigns in Europe, Egypt, South Africa, and India from 1793 to Harness's death in India in 1804. They present an affecting picture of the loving concern of a family man for his wife and children during long years of separation. An interesting first-hand account of the early period of the Napoleonic Wars.
