A scarce pre-war account of the activities of the sailing ship owners, Devitt & Moore, between 1836 and 1936, intertwined with the life of Sir Thomas Devitt, Bart. who became a partner in the company in 1860 until his illness in 1920. The author describes the early days of Devitt & Moore, their shipbroking activities, the beautiful full-riggers PARRAMATTA and SOBRAON and other fine windjammers ; the training ships and the eventual founding of Pangbourne Nautical College ; life in the City and Devitt's home life. Other sailing ships described, and in some cases illustrated, include COLLINGWOOD, MEDWAY, PORT JACKSON, HESPERUS, HARBINGER, MACQUARIE, ILLAWARRA, etc. There is also an excellent photographic portrait of Duncan Dunbar. With attractive pre-war Prize Label for Pangbourne Nautical College with engraving of a square-rigger.
