The social history, spanning 150 years, of one of Liverpool's oldest shipping firms with origins dating back to 1793 when Bahr Behrend's founder, Danish-born Lorentz Hansen (1760-1831), settled in Liverpool seven years earlier. Hansen took Charles Louis Bahr into partnership and in 1835 David Behrend was invited in also. Their shipbroking and agency business thrived and played a significant role in the development of the port during the heyday of sail in the 19th century.
