Ian Allan, ‘Modern Combat Aircraft’ series, 1st ed., 1978. 112 pp., frontis., many photo-ills., + ills., + some cold., photo-ills. D.j., 24 x 18cm. V.G.+. The author describes the F-14 Tomcat as being ‘The most potent air superiority fighter in the Western armoury’. This foreboding fighter boasted an onboard Hughes AWG-9 weapons system. The Hughes Phoenix missile gave the Tomcat its Sunday punch – in effect six small fighters to each F-14, each with minds of their own, able to catch and knock down incoming threats whether they were flying at sea level or at 100,000 feet, subsonically or at Mach 5.5.
