Stroud, new ed., 1999. Xii + 294 pp., photo-ills. D.j., 25 x 17cm. FINE. Out of more than 600 VC's awarded to British and Empire servicemen during World War I, 19 were awarded to airmen of the newly formed Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. Of these, four were posthumous awards and all but one of the total were to officers. The aircraft they flew were as varied as their individual character and social background, all of which is described, along with the circumstances in which these gallant men won their VC's.
