In this shorter version of his standard history of the Victoria Cross, the author omits the statistical information but records many V.C.s awarded from the Crimean War to 1964. Two substantial sections are devoted to both World Wars respectively and other wars such as the Indian Mutiny, smaller Victorian campaigns, the Zulu Wars, South Africa, V.C.s and V.C. reunions between the World Wars and V.C.s awarded after 1945, are also all recorded. The author also paints a graphic picture of many of the circumstances under which the award was gained.
