Captain Sir John Kincaid was born in Stirlingshire in 1787 and joined the 95th Rifles in 1809 when he took part in the Walcheren expedition. Throughout the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns he recorded his remarkable account of his dramatic experiences. He was promoted Captain in 1826 and in 1852 was knighted. His first-hand account of the Spanish Peninsular War and the Waterloo campaign is rightfully regarded as a classic and this is a facsimile of the 1909 edition.
