Paris, rep., 1919. 242 pp. Brown cloth; 18 x 12cm. V.G. This is an early French post-First World War study of Robert Nivelle and Paul Painleve. The period in focus is from December 1916 until May 1917 during which time Nivelle was commander-in-chief. His command covered the Aisne offensive which failed and resulted in Nivelle being superseded by Petain. It is addressed by this book as being ‘the second crisis of commandment’. Paul Painleve, who is also examined in this book, was repeatedly minister for war, twice air minister and premier in 1917.
